Teachers' Conference 2021

Newly minted Education Minister Chan Chun Sing’s testimony of how he was impacted by his dedicated teacher touched me deeply.

He related, “Most of us will have one or more inspiring teachers in our lives. Miss Low, my Primary 3 form teacher at MacPherson Primary School, was one. From a boy who only had the confidence to read picture books for children, Miss Low encouraged me to read beyond and more, page by page, building my confidence and sense of curiosity.”

I, too, have one memory deeply etched in my mind.

I remember having my first ever western meal in my first coffee house visit, a treat given by my Primary 5 teacher. It was a simple but delicious hot dog bun which I ate using a knife and fork.

Young and unconventional, Ms Chua wanted us, neighbourhood kids, to have that experience.

It is one of those memories that’s hard to erase.

I never knew where she went, but wherever you are, Ms Chua, thanks for caring!

Big thanks too to all the sincere and wonderful educators I have the privilege of studying under; AND serving in special schools and mainstream!
