On Budget 2024
Friends, I spoke on Budget 2024 and raised 3 points - (1) ensuring budgets goals are indeed achieved; (2) sustainability to pay for it; and (3) how the Government can be a better partner to esp the non-profit sector to build a shared future together.
Here’s the synopsis and video from CNA:
“… Budget 2024 is not merely a financial plan; it is a blueprint for a compassionate, inclusive and resilient society," said MP Denise Phua in Parliament on Monday (Feb 26).
However, she said there is a need to scrutinize more closely if its intended outcomes will be met.
Ms. Phua gave the example of support for ITE graduates aged under 30 as well as mid-career workers to upskill. She said it is unclear if they will be deterred by the opportunity cost of not working and whether they will get enough guidance to ensure training is aligned with their strengths and job market needs.
Ms. Phua also raised concerns about the sustainability of escalating social development costs and elaborated on how the Government can foster more robust partnerships to make the Budget theme of “Building Our Shared Future Together” a tangible reality.”
